Clear Braces Q & A

by R. (Ron) Hessamfar, DMD, MS

What Are Clear Braces?

Clear braces are similar to traditional metal braces, except the brackets, and in many cases the wires, are made from a clear ceramic material making them much less visible. Ceramic braces are often used on older teenagers and adults who are concerned about the aesthetics of having a mouth full of metal braces. The brackets are made from a clear or tooth colored ceramic alloy and are typically a little larger than a metal bracket.  Clear ceramic braces also require more attention during brushing and flossing.

What Are the Benefits of Clear Braces?

Clear braces unite the advantages of clear aligners with the effectiveness of traditional braces. Many people want to use the clear ceramic braces because they are practically invisible when being worn which makes them feel more confident during the straighten process. Additionaly patients can use color ties as it fits to their desire which can also be switched for for clear ties if necessary. Ceramic braces are another more aesthetically pleasing choice for correcting bite and alignment.  Patients who chose the clear ceramic braces can receive the same or better benefits as clear aligners. Additionally, clear braces are a good fit for people with severely crooked teeth who are not considered candidates for aligners. Ceramic braces are stain free, however the clear tie that holds the wire to the brackets can be stained but can also be changed at each visit. Additionaly these Clear ties can be switched out for color ties during a special occasion if desired.
